Each year, the United States dedicates the month of March to Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Awareness, and the week of marzo 13- 19 is Multiple Sclerosis week. You might see orange ribbons with a butterfly attached to lapels during this time. Orange is the official color of MS awareness. When a person sees if they have Multiple Scelrosis, they undergo a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) procedure. When MS is confirmed, a butterfly shape appears on the MRI scan which is why butterflies are often assoicated with MS awareness.

What is Multiple Sclerosis?

Multiple Sclerosis is a disease of the central nervous system. Researchers believe it is an autoimmune condition, where the immune system mistakenly attacks normal tissue instead of only infected tissue. The immune system will attack the myelin sheath found in the brain. The myelin sheath protects nerve fibers in the brain, optic nerve, and spinal cord. Over time, the myelin sheath is destroyed. The destroyed sheath results in scar tissue (Sclerosis) disrupting electrical impulses between the brain and other body parts.  

Unfortunately, there are no known factors that cause MS or ways to prevent it. Many people diagnosed with MS have no known risk factors

In marzo 2019, the journal Neurology estimated the number of people living with MS in the United States now reaches as high as 1 million people whereas years prior, the number was half that. Researchers, while working on a cure and treatment plans, are currently trying to figure out why there has been a significant increase in new cases.  

This Year’s Awareness Theme

The theme from 2020-2022 for Multiple Sclerosis week is “Connections.” Advocacy groups have asked people diagnosed with MS to share their stories of connecting with their community, themselves, healthcare team, family, and friends after receiving the diagnosis. Once people share their stories, advocacy groups ask people to use the hashtag #MSConnections. The hope is this will spark a dialogue and bring attention to the disease and provide more funding for research.

By remodeling for a step-less entry, you can be confident your entry will be safer and more comfortable. Here are the steps for remodeling for a step-less entry into your home: 

How To Remodel

  1. Have a covered entrance built over the entranceway. The covered entry aids in controlling water at a low threshold and ensures protection during inclement weather. 
  1. Make sure there is adequate maneuvering space around storm doors and screen doors. 
  1. Measure 5’x5’ as the minimum for level landing area maneuvering. 
  1. The walkway should be 4′ wide and sloped at 1:20 or less. If the slopes are steeper than 1:30, you will need to install handrails. 
  1. By using a mixture of retaining walls and earth berm, you will have an effective method that supplies a step-less route to the landing while keeping an integrated appearance of the home. 
  1. Remove the original small stoop. 
  1. When set at the same level as the interior house floor, the new porch landing will diminish the step at the entry door. 
  1. Prepare a flush or low-profile threshold ½’. This measurement will need to be the maximum height. 
  1. Install handrails with an integral package shelf. 
  1.  Exchange your house numbers for higher contrast numbers to ensure the numbers are easy to read at a distance.

  • Change your faucet turners to levered handles. Changing them will make turning on your sink and tub more accessible.

Make sure the tread is in safe working order on your ramp

When winter weather is coming down, it is essential that you add either rock salt to the ramp or kitty litter to keep the tread working properly. With the harsh holiday season and delayed shipments, Next Day Access Richmond owner, Jesse Henby drives 300 plus miles in severe snowstorm for a stair lift to install in a customer’s home. 

There are many tasks and things people do in their daily lives that others cannot do without the help of another individual. That’s why Next Day Access provides accessibility and mobility solutions to help individuals with limited mobility live independently in their homes.

Accessibility Solution: the Stair Lift

Monte-escaliers are one of the many solutions. They help people age in place or with limited mobility go up or down the stairs. Living in a two-story home can become strenuous and dangerous when faced with an injury, recovery, or aging. But with this helpful accessibility solution, individuals can sit comfortably and glide along the staircase.

However, sometimes the need for a stair lift can be sudden and unexpected, leading to stress and urgency. A customer of Next Day Access Richmond faced just that.

The customer scheduled a date with Next Day Access to install a stair lift before bringing his wife home from the hospital. But due to the severe snowstorms and delayed deliveries, Henby realized the stair lift would not arrive in time to meet the customer’s needs because the package was inaccessible.

He scrambled and reached out to neighboring Next Day Access locations asking if they had any stair lifts available. Luckily, Next Day Access Baltimore had one available. With one of the core values of Next Day Access being “responsive,” every situation and customer is met with urgency.

Henby drove 300 plus miles to pick up the stair lift during a snowstorm to bring back to Richmond for his customer.

A fall for an aging loved one can be detrimental because their bones are more brittle causing a hospital visit. We at Next Day Access want to help prevent falls for you or your aging loved one.

We understand sometimes older adults could be on medication that could cause dizziness which makes them more likely to fall. To ensure safety this winter season, here is a list of tips to help you stay safe.

Fall Prevention Tips

  1. When getting out of a car, be sure to use a car handle that slides into your car door or a handle that attaches to the handle near the top of the door. Both help you lean down on them as you exit the vehicle. Once you have your footing, grab arms with your companion and slowly make your way indoors. 
  1. Use handrails when provided. Move slowly, taking your time to use the railing as far as it will get you.
  1. Wearing gloves keep your hands warm and can be helpful when gripping walls or rails. Keeping your hands free can improve your ability to maintain balance. Consider wearing a cross shoulder bag, backpack, or fanny pack.
  1. Concentrate on the path ahead without distractions, and walk slowly. Make sure to firmly plant each foot on the ground as you walk. 
  1. If you have your cell phone on you, call the family member or friend you are meeting. If you are by yourself, ask a store employee or manager to assist you.
  1. Plan ahead for your outing. If you notice treacherous, snowy, icy, rainy, or slippery weather, do your best to rearrange your plans. 
  1. Wear proper footwear. You get a pass on fashion during winter weather! Wear boots or shoes with textured soles with a grip on the bottom that adheres to messy weather. 
  1. If you need a mobility device to help, ensure you have one with a good grip.
  1.  Do not rush. If that means you must leave home sooner, so be it. Rushing can cause a slip. 
  1. Lastly, always ask for help! People are often willing to assist you.
