Next Day Access Kansas City was honored to donate a ramp installation at the Night to Stand event for NextStep Kansas City. NextStep Kansas City is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing Activity-Based Therapy for individuals living with paralysis. Located in Overland Park, NextStep Kansas City is the sole facility of its kind in the area, committed to being a cutting-edge paralysis recovery center. “Our mission at NextStep is to offer accessible and effective interventions, along with other resources, to promote recovery, health, and wellness among our clients,” said Katie Johnson, an employee at NextStep. Since insurance does not cover their program, they heavily rely on community support to ensure that those living with paralysis have access to effective recovery programs. There are a few crucial components that bring this to life: managing recovery costs, continually enhancing and maintaining training equipment, and financially assisting clients. Since fundraisers are critical for NextStep’s various events, especially Night to Stand, Next Day Access Kansas City seized the opportunity to donate a wheelchair ramp.

Night to Stand is an annual charity dinner and auction organized to support year-long opportunities for their clients. “This year, our focus is on shattering barriers, celebrating the progress made by our clients, and to ignite the spark for the transformative work that lies ahead,” Katie continued. “The interventions we offer are more than just programs; they are lifelines that offer independence, strength, and the realization of untapped potential for individuals facing paralysis.” The theme of the event, breakthrough, aligned well with the work that Next Day Access does, and it was a natural fit for Kansas City to participate.

“After searching Google and contacting numerous rental options locally, I quickly realized the scarcity of short-term ramp rentals throughout Kansas City. I eventually discovered Next Day Access and was surprised to learn about their widespread presence across the country, along with their effortless service in my area,” said Chris Smith, the Executive Director of NextStep Kansas City. “Next Day Access provided the precise ramp solution I needed for my fundraiser and collaborated with the stage provider to secure the ramp to the stage effectively. The entire process was seamless.”

RALEIGH/DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA, UNITED STATES, mai 13, 2024 – Next Day Access is proud to announce the opening of the Next Day Access Raleigh/Durham, NC franchise location.

Next Day Access is expanding to two locations in North Carolina. Rob Williams and Jason Williamson are the owners of Next Day Access Raleigh/Durham, NC, serving the Triangle area.

Rob began his career in general contracting, which he has done for 32 years, and he has worked in real estate for 21 years. His understanding of the accessibility world grew as he began modifying his father’s home. While he was living independently, Rob’s father relied heavily on the accessibility devices Rob installed, such as grab bars and wheelchair ramps. Doing this fulfilling work helped Rob realize that this was a business in which he wanted to invest, and he knew who he wanted to partner with to begin this journey.

Jason Williamson is a Gulf War veteran, and his work in real estate spans over 25 years, and he owns and operates the nonprofit Williamson Resource Foundation, which partners with local VA chapters to educate the public on financial literacy and helps unhoused individuals. As a disabled veteran himself, Jason empathizes with those who were injured in action, so it made perfect sense for him to partner with Rob in opening a Next Day Access franchise location. They are joined by Jason Williamson II, their technician, Brook Williams, Rob’s wife, and other employees.

Next Day Access Raleigh/Durham, NC will serve the Triangle area of North Carolina. They specialize in wheelchair ramps, stairlifts, grab bars, porch lifts, and more. To learn more about Next Day Access Raleigh/Durham, NC, visit their website: https://www.nextdayaccess.com/raleigh-durham-nc/

In recent years, family living arrangements have seen a significant transformation. The rise of multigenerational living, where grandparents, parents, and children share a single household, is becoming increasingly common. This shift, driven by economic factors, cultural preferences, and the desire for a shared family life, brings with it a unique set of challenges and opportunities. One of the most pressing challenges is ensuring that the home environment caters to the diverse needs of all family members, particularly when it comes to accessibility.

Accessibility in multigenerational homes goes beyond mobility aids like scooters and wheelchairs. It encompasses the broader vision of creating spaces that are easily accessible to individuals of all ages and abilities. This means designing living environments that not only accommodate mobility devices but also incorporate features that make daily life safer, easier, and more inclusive for everyone. From stair lifts and home elevators to lift chairs and ADA-compliant modifications, the goal is to implement solutions that promote independence, safety, and comfort across generations.

In the following sections, we’ll explore the key accessibility solutions that can transform multigenerational homes into havens of comfort and independence, ensuring that every family member can thrive in a shared living space.

The Importance of Accessibility in Multigenerational Homes

The concept of a home evolves as it embraces multiple generations under one roof. In multigenerational households, accessibility becomes a cornerstone, ensuring that every family member, from toddlers to seniors, can navigate daily life with dignity and ease.

Independence: Empowering Autonomy for All Ages

graphic shows figures depicting various ages

Accessibility is fundamentally about empowerment. It’s about creating an environment where family members of all ages and abilities can move freely, without relying on others. For the young and the elderly alike, simple modifications like wider doorways for scooter access or stair lifts can make a significant difference in how they interact with their living space. This autonomy is crucial for self-esteem and mental health, fostering a sense of capability and resilience.

Safety: Mitigating Risks in the Family Home

graphic shows individual slipping and falling

In a multigenerational setting, accessible homes have two main safety benefits. First, it protects those at higher risk of falls, such as the elderly or those with mobility issues, by incorporating features like grab bars in bathrooms, non-slip flooring, and adequate lighting. Second, it creates a safer environment for children, who are naturally curious and prone to accidents, by minimizing potential hazards. A home that provides solutions like these prevents injuries as well as provides peace of mind for the entire family that it is a safe haven.

Aging in Place: Fostering Comfort and Dignity at Home

graphic shows an older couple on a bench

The desire to age in place, to grow old in the comfort of one’s home, surrounded by family, is powerful. Accessibility plays a pivotal role in making this desire a reality. By adapting homes to meet the evolving needs of older family members, we enable them to maintain independence and quality of life even as their physical capabilities change. Solutions such as residential elevators, lift chairs, and wheelchair ramps are investments in the dignity and comfort of older adults, allowing them to age gracefully in the familiar surroundings of their family home.

5 Accessibility Solutions for Multigenerational Living

Creating an accessible multigenerational home involves combining innovative solutions and thoughtful modifications. The solutions not only address specific needs but also foster an environment in which family members can live peacefully regardless of their age or mobility.

1. Wheelchair Ramps: Opening Doors to Independence

graphic shows picture of NDA wheelchair ramp

Rampes pour fauteuils roulants are fundamental in homes where stairs pose a barrier to entry for anyone using Fauteuils roulants, scooters, or walkers. Options range from portable ramps for temporary needs to permanent, custom-designed ramps that blend seamlessly into the home’s exterior. The key is to ensure safe, easy access, reinforcing residents’ autonomy.

2. Stair Lifts and Home Elevators: Elevating Accessibility

graphic shows picture of NDA stair lift

Monte-escaliers offer a practical solution to multi-level homes, allowing individuals to move between floors safely and comfortably. Home elevators, on the other hand, provide a more comprehensive solution, accommodating not just individuals but also laundry, groceries, and more. While stair lifts are cost-effective and less invasive to install, home elevators offer long-term value and are beneficial for resale.

3. Mobility Scooters: Enhancing Mobility Inside and Out

graphic shows picture of woman on mobility scooter

Mobility scooters are invaluable for those who can navigate short distances but need assistance on longer trips. Inside the home, ensuring wide doorways and clutter-free paths is crucial. Outside, scooters support participation in family outings, adding to quality of life.

4. Lift Chairs: Merging Comfort and Support

graphic shows picture of NDA lift chair

Chaises élévatrices are a dual-purpose solution that provides comfortable seating while also helping individuals stand up without strain. Ideal for the elderly, these chairs are a testament to how accessibility solutions can blend into daily living without compromising home aesthetics.

5. Fall Prevention: Simple Steps to a Safer Environment

graphic shows picture of woman in a towel sitting in the shower and using NDA grab bar

Fall prevention modifications are among the most straightforward yet impactful changes a family can make. Installing Barres d'appui in strategic locations, ensuring adequate lighting, and opting for non-slip flooring can dramatically reduce the risk of falls, making the home safer for everyone, especially the elderly and young children.

ADA Accessibility: Meeting and Exceeding Standards

Adhering to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility standards is crucial when modifying. These standards ensure that changes are not just effective but also safe and legal. Consulting with professionals can help families navigate these regulations, ensuring that their home modifications meet the highest accessibility standards.

Implementing Accessibility Solutions

Transforming a multigenerational home into an accessible environment requires careful planning and consideration. By approaching this process with care and attention to detail, families can create an inclusive environment that supports the independence and well-being of all generations living under one roof.

Assessment: Tailoring Solutions to Individual Needs

graphic shows individual with a checklist

The first step in implementing accessibility solutions is a thorough assessment of each family member’s needs. This involves considering current mobility challenges and future needs. Factors such as the age of the residents, the severity of mobility issues, and the layout of the home play a crucial role in determining the most appropriate modifications. This personalized approach ensures that the solutions implemented will genuinely enhance the quality of life for all inhabitants.

Professional Consultation: Leveraging Expert Insights

graphic shows individual talking with a professional

Consulting with accessibility professionals can provide invaluable insights into the most effective solutions for your home. These experts can advise on everything from the most suitable types of stair lifts to the latest innovations in residential elevators. They can also help navigate ADA compliance complexities, ensuring that all modifications meet legal standards. The expertise of these professionals can save time, reduce costs, and ensure that the chosen solutions are both practical and compliant.

Aesthetic Considerations: Blending Functionality with Style

Accessibility solutions should enhance home functionality without compromising aesthetics. Modern accessibility products are designed with both form and function in mind, offering options that seamlessly integrate into any home decor. Whether it’s a sleek and compact home elevator or a stylish lift chair that complements your living room furniture, you can find solutions that match your home’s look and feel.

Future Planning: Opting for Flexible and Scalable Solutions

When implementing accessibility solutions, it’s essential to think long-term. Choosing adaptable and scalable solutions can accommodate multigenerational families’ evolving needs. For instance, opting for modular wheelchair ramps or stair lifts that can be easily upgraded or modified can provide flexibility as family members’ mobility needs change. Planning for the future ensures that the home remains accessible and comfortable for years to come, offering peace of mind to all residents.

Design a Home for All Generations

Creating an accessible environment in multigenerational homes is more than a matter of convenience; it’s a commitment to fostering an inclusive space where every family member, regardless of age or mobility, can thrive. By incorporating solutions like wheelchair ramps, stair lifts, and residential elevators, these homes transform into comfortable spaces that support independence, safety, and dignity for everyone..

TUCSON, ARIZONA, UNITED STATES, avril 2, 2024 – Next Day Access is honored to announce a new franchise location in Tucson, Arizona.

Next Day Access is continuing to expand with its fourth location opening in 2024 in Tucson, Arizona. Dominic D’Arpino, along with Next Day Access veterans April Springer, Chris Bakalars, and Carl Loge, are looking forward to serving the southern Arizona community beginning avril 1.

Dominic is no stranger to the accessibility world; he has been in the medical device industry for nearly 23 years, and 7 of those specifically in Accessibility/Safe Patient Handling. After working for manufacturers who provide products to Next Day Access, Dominic’s interest in Next Day Access piqued. He found he was just as passionate about providing solutions to clients as the teams he worked with, and as the work continued, Dominic saw an opportunity to make a strong impact. “I am really excited about being more involved as a local provider that can have a direct impact on the community I live in,” says Dominic.

Of all the companies that he worked with, he found that his experience with Next Day Access stood out for all the right reasons. “The entire network has always been first class,” Dominic says, “and my business partners that operate Minnesota, Pittsburgh, and Kansas City are prime examples of this!” It was a no-brainer: Dominic aligned with the Next Day Access core values, so it was time to get to work on a new franchise location!

“I’ve witnessed the impact that our solutions can make on a family’s quality of life,” Dominic states. “My goal is to provide the right solutions to help provide independence to those that need it most.”

JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA, UNITED STATES, mars 25, 2024 – Next Day Access is proud to announce the opening of the Next Day Access Northeast Florida franchise location.

Next Day Access is expanding to three Florida locations with northeast Florida joining the mix. Drew and Cathy Jolly are the owners of this new location, serving Jacksonville, Gainesville, Daytona Beach, and surrounding areas.

After getting out of the US Coast Guard, Cathy and Drew met and fell in love, getting married in 1997. The first seventeen years of their marriage, they lived in the Tallahassee area while raising their family but moved to Jacksonville, FL for Drew’s career in Information Technology. Five years later, the Jolly family wound up in a difficult situation.

“In 2019,” Drew recounts, “my father was diagnosed with leukemia and his health quickly turned for the worse.” The Jolly’s were able to move his father in, where they were blessed to have him spend the last year together. “We had no idea what to do or expect; we had never prepared for anything like this,” Drew says. A military man himself, he got connected with the Jacksonville VA, which he calls a godsend for how they aided him in organizing treatment for his father. One thing the Jolly’s noticed during this experience is that there are many unfortunate decisions that all care givers must make, and the VA helped them navigate those decisions with minimal stress.

With their new perspective on life, they decided that now is the time to make a positive impact on the world, and they believe Next Day Access will help them make their dream a reality. “We will provide accessibility solutions to help our neighbors stay in their homes as long as possible, which will improve their quality of life,” Drew states. “I have a passion for helping people.” The Jolly’s are looking forward to helping their northeast Florida neighbors for many years to come.

Next Day Access Northeast Florida will focus on providing accessibility and mobility solutions to individuals of all ages across the area. They provide a range of custom accessibility & mobility solutions for residences and businesses such as wheelchair ramps, stair lifts, grab bars, vertical platform lifts, pool lifts, and in-home elevators.

In today’s world, inclusive design in public spaces is not just a trend; it’s a necessity. These spaces, ranging from parks to retail storefronts, play a pivotal role in our communities. They are the arenas where social interactions flourish and communal bonds strengthen.

However, to truly harness their potential, we must design these spaces with everyone in mind. Inclusive design ensures that public spaces provide accessibility solutions to the diverse needs of the entire community.

Geographic Accessibility Standards

Around the world, countries are taking different steps to make public spaces more inclusive. In Canada, the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) sets rules to make sure businesses and retail spaces are open to everyone, including those with disabilities. These rules are similar to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the United States. For example, the AODA requires that by 2025, every public place in Ontario must be accessible. This includes their physical layout, how they serve customers, and their hiring practices.

Ontario has been a leader in setting strict accessibility standards for businesses. The creation of Accessibility Standards Canada (ASC) was a big move towards making national accessibility standards. ASC has many committees working on standards to break down barriers in various areas. While it’s initially optional to follow ASC’s standards, they often become required once they’re part of the law.

This approach in Ontario has become a model for others. In the United States, there’s a growing movement towards making public spaces more accessible. This change shows a wider understanding that accessible design is not just about meeting legal needs. It’s also about creating communities that are more inclusive, active, and full of life.

Incorporating Inclusive Design in Your Community

The significance of inclusive design becomes even more apparent when we consider public spaces for community engagement. Well-designed, accessible spaces invite participation from all community members, creating a sense of belonging and connectedness. They become places where barriers are broken down and inclusivity is celebrated. This encourages people from all walks of life to come together, interact, and engage with one another.

One of the most significant advantages of inclusive design is its universality. By integrating thoughtful accessibility solutions, it crafts more comfortable and safer spaces for all users. For instance, a ramp designed for wheelchair users is also helpful for a traveler with a heavy suitcase.

Well-lit pathways in a park will aid people with visual impairments and also enhance safety for everyone during the evening. Clear and simple signage in public buildings assists individuals with cognitive disabilities and supports visitors unfamiliar with the language or layout.

Even the availability of mobility scooters and wheelchairs on-site allows visitors to comfortably navigate larger areas, enhancing the overall experience for everyone.

Inclusive design also fosters belonging and community. When people feel welcome and accommodated in a space, they are more likely to use it, return to it, and recommend it to others. This increased usage brings more vibrant and active public spaces, which in turn strengthens community ties and engagement.

Creating Spaces for Everyone to Thrive

Building inclusive public spaces is a comprehensive approach to design that considers the diverse needs of all individuals, ensuring that public spaces like parks, museums, business buildings, retail storefronts, and restaurants are not only accessible but also enjoyable for everyone.

Adding these elements to public design improves the experience for everyone. Whether it’s a parent pushing a stroller, a teenager recovering from a sports injury, or an elderly person enjoying a walk, these features prove beneficial. Designing public spaces with everyone in mind allows us to create environments that serve the entire community effectively. Below is a snapshot of standards and recommended inclusive design principles for various public spaces.

Universal Design Principles

Universal Design Principles are fundamental guidelines that aim to create environments accessible and usable by all people, regardless of their age, size, ability, or disability. These principles are crucial to shaping more inclusive public spaces. Here’s a breakdown of these principles and their impact:

By adhering to these universal design principles, public spaces become more than just physically accessible; they become spaces where inclusivity is woven into the very fabric of their design. This approach both benefits individuals with disabilities and also creates a more comfortable, safe, and welcoming environment for everyone in the community.

Challenges and Solutions in Inclusive Design

Implementing inclusive design in public spaces can be a complex undertaking, facing various challenges. However, with strategic approaches and collaborative efforts, these challenges can be overcome. Here are some common issues encountered and solutions that can be applied:

Inclusive design not only fosters a more accessible environment but also brings significant economic and social benefits to businesses and communities. Understanding these advantages highlights why inclusive design is a smart investment.

Community Involvement in Design

Involving the community in the design of public spaces is essential for ensuring they meet all users’ needs. Here are some strategies for effective community engagement:

By actively involving the community, public spaces can become more inclusive and reflective of diverse needs. This collaborative approach fosters community ownership but also leads to more innovative and effective design solutions.

The Role of Technology in Inclusive Design

Technology is reshaping how we make public spaces accessible and inclusive. Innovative solutions create environments that everyone can use and enjoy, no matter their abilities.

Take assistive technologies, for example. Voice-activated systems and augmented reality are making it easier for people with disabilities to get around. Microsoft’s Soundscape app is an excellent example. It uses 3D audio cues to help visually impaired people navigate cities on their own.

Smart design is also key. Things like sensor-based lighting and automated doors add more than convenience. They’re essential for people with physical limitations. These smart features ensure public spaces are open to everyone, improving the experience for all users.

Information accessibility is another area where technology is making a big difference. Digital platforms are vital for sharing information in different ways. More and more, mobile apps provide audio descriptions and sign language. Apps like AccessNow, which maps out accessible locations worldwide, show how technology can spread critical information.

Looking ahead, AI and wearable technologies are set to take inclusive design even further. They promise personalized help and immersive experiences in public spaces. This means these places will be more accessible and engaging for everyone. This shift towards technology-driven inclusivity is paving the way for a future where public spaces are truly for all.

Moving Towards Accessibility Solutions for All

It’s not just about adhering to legal standards; it’s about reshaping our environments to be welcoming and usable for everyone, regardless of their abilities. This approach enriches communities, enhances quality of life for all citizens, and paves the way for a more equitable future.
